March 18, 2007 23:28 - Packers Deny Attempts to Trade QB Aaron Rodgers

"It's never been discussed inside the building or outside the building," Green Bay general manager Ted Thompson told the Green Bay Press-Gazette when asked about the chances of a deal that would include Rodgers.

The Packers picked up Aaron Rodgers two years ago in the 2005 NFL Draft. Although Rodgers was expecting to go relatively early in the draft, he was forced to wait in the "Green Room" for many hours until Green Bay finally picked him with the 24th pick.

The thinking most likely at the time was that Brett Favre was nearing retirement. Most people in the organization probably thought Aaron Rodgers would be the Pack's starting quarterback by this time.

However, with Favre coming back for a third season since Rodger's selection, it'll be another season on the bench for the young signal-caller.

Last season, Rodgers completed six of 15 passes for 46 yards before breaking his left foot during a 35-0 loss to the New England Patriots on Nov. 19. Rodgers was placed on IR after the injury.

"I think [Aaron's] a very talented guy," Thompson said. "He's everything we thought of in terms of intelligence, and his physical ability, his ability to throw the ball. I like the way he handles himself around the team."

March 19, 2007 21:08 - Buccaneers Add Cato June to Roster

Over the weekend, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Linebacker Cato June to a three-year contract that's said to be worth about $12 million.

This makes sense for both sides, as the Buccaneers play the same defense June was used to in Indianapolis with the Colts.

Even though June didn't have a stellar 2006 campaign, he should fit in nicely with his new teammates in Tampa Bay...

"June could end up playing a variety of roles. Derrick Brooks is a fixture on the weak side. June could get playing time at middle linebacker, especially if veteran Shelton Quarles retires because of a history of concussions. However, Barrett Ruud seems likely to step into Quarles' starting role in that scenario. June could also get some playing time on the strong side, but he doesn't have ideal size for that position." - Pro Football Weekly

Now the Colts have to replace June. It seems like every year the Colts lose a linebacker. With Bill Polian's draft record, we think Indianapolis will be OK.

March 25, 2007 22:50 - Roethlisberger Should Be Just Fine

Last week, Ben Roethlisberger responded to some remarks by ex-Steelers offensive coordinator, Ken Whisenhunt (now the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals), that Roethlisberger was rushed back last year.

Here's what Big Ben had to say:

"No, I don't agree with Whis. There were a lot of things I didn't agree with Whis about, and that's another one. Coach Cowher always came to me and asked me how I felt, and I was always 100 percent honest with him. I was always honest with the doctors...

"We have an unbelievable medical staff. They cleared me and, if they gave me clearance, we never hushed anything. No, I don't think anything was rushed. I think I just didn't play well. I had a bad year."

While tape of Big Ben does show a bit of evidence that he was initially gun shy, especially that Jacksonville game in his first game back, everyone calling Roethlisberger a failure is jumping the gun a bit.

He had two amazing years in the NFL. Year 1: AFC Championship loss. Year 2: Super Bowl Championship.

Every great quarterback, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Dan Marino, John Elway, had their share of so-so years.

Big Ben came on in the second half of the 2006 season. With new coach Mike Tomlin and new offensive coordinator Bruce Arians streamlining the playbook for '07, the Steelers and Roethlisberger will play well again.

Big Ben detractors nonwithstanding, we look for Pittsburgh to "surprise" people once again and challenge for a championship.

March 26, 2007 23:41 - Briggs to Redskins Would Make Sense

The Washington Redskins and Chicago Bears are talking about a trade involving unhappy Lance Briggs.

This would be a trade that works for both teams. Briggs wants out of Chicago and the Bears could get rid of a player who's only causing a headache. They obviously are only interested in signing him for a year anyway.

It looks like the teams are talking about swapping first round picks in the draft. If this were to happen, the Bears move up from the 31st slot all the way up to the Redskins' 6th spot.

Drafting at #6 gives Chicago the opportunity to get an impact player to replace the impact player they'd be losing in Briggs.

Washington gets an impact player they know is proven and gets out of the 6th spot (it's been rumored that they've been wanting to trade down anyway).

And Briggs gets what he wants, his long-term contract. As ESPN.com said,

"Briggs, 26, told ESPN.com three weeks ago that he preferred to be traded or have Chicago rescind the franchise tag and make him a free agent rather than return to the Bears. He said he would 'not play one more day' for the Bears. He subsequently told Fox Sports that he would sit out the entire 2007 season rather than play for Chicago under terms of the franchise marker.

Maybe Briggs gets paid what he thinks he's worth, and the Bears and Redskins get what they want, too.

Let's see if it happens...

March 27, 2007 22:55 - Will Lane Kiffin Finally be Something Right With the Raiders?

It's interesting how Kiffin got the Raiders job...

"Kiffin, then the USC offensive coordinator, attended Steve Sarkisian's second job interview with the Raiders. Sarkisian wanted to hire Kiffin as his offensive coordinator, so Davis told him to bring him along. After Sarkisian turned down the chance to get the Raiders job, Davis called Kiffin, who knew exactly what to say in an interview that led to his becoming the league's youngest head coach in the modern era.

"I guess I kinda had the answers to the test," Kiffin said. "I went with Steve on his interview. So I came back two days later and had the answers to the test at that point."

"Passing the Al Davis test is one thing. Winning is another thing. Though it's obviously premature in March to predict the Raiders' hopes following a 2-14 season, Kiffin offered a refreshing glimpse at the next two years of Raiders football. Clearly, he's bright. The son of a defensive genius, Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, Lane Kiffin was born to be a coach. As a kid, he'd watch the sidelines more than the field to see how coaches acted and made strategy decisions." - ESPN.com

Time will tell if Lane Kiffin is bright enough to turn around the misfits known as the Oakland Raiders...

March 28, 2007 21:06 - Looking Forward to Watching Bly & Bailey in Denver This Year

Even though the Oakland Raiders went to the Super Bowl only four years ago, why does it seem as if they've been miserable for decades now?

It looks like Dre' Bly is happy about being a Denver Bronco now.

$16 million has a way of making a person happy!

That's how much Bly is guaranteed with his new Bronco contract. It's a five-year, $33 million contract and includes $18 million in bonus money, including the previously mentioned $16 million in guaranteed money.

"Bly, 29, had a year left on his contract when he was sent to Denver in exchange for running back Tatum Bell and offensive lineman George Foster. Denver also got a sixth-round pick and Detroit got a fifth-round pick.

"Bly has 33 career interceptions, the fourth-most in the league since 1999. He has returned five interceptions for touchdowns in his career...

"... Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan told the Denver Post that Bly initially wasn't happy when traded to Denver, but he believes Bly will be happy with the Broncos." - ESPN.com

With Bly and Champ Bailey in the defensive backfield, Bronco's opponents are going to have a tough time. Should be fun watching these two in action...
